Increased numbers of schoolchildren with febrile respiratory sickness are sometimes the primary indication of influenza in a group, soon followed by diseases in adults and, 1 to 2 weeks later, by elevated hospital admission of sufferers with influenza-related complications. Hospitalization charges in high-risk individuals increase two- to five-fold during major epidemics Table 364-3). School and employment absenteeism will increase, as does mortality from pneumonia and underlying situations, especially in older adults during A/H3N2 epidemics. Epidemics occur nearly exclusively in the course of the late autumn and winter months in temperate areas, however influenza exercise could occur year-round in the tropics or show different patterns. The reasons for the distinct seasonality of influenza in temperate climates are uncertain but may embrace the college calendar, increased close indoor contact, and absolute humidity, which impacts airborne transmissibility. Outbreaks sometimes occur in tour teams (land or ship) and in continual care amenities throughout summer months, significantly after the looks of a drift variant.
